Visual Timers for Time Blindness: What Actually Helps

When I ask Cody about Time Blindness, he describes sitting down to answer a few emails, looks up and 90 minutes have gone. It's challenging because we're not lazy, or bad at planning, time sometimes slips away. 

We talk about this a lot because it's exactly what we're trying to fight against with new ways of visualizing time and experience the passing of time. 

What Time Blindness Actually Is

Time blindness is a difference in time perception connected to ADHD and some forms of autism. The ADHD brain does not naturally track the passage of time the way a neurotypical brain does.

Dr. Russell Barkley has described the ADHD brain as operating in two zones: now and not now. Abstract time falls into the "not now" category. It does not register unless something external makes it visible and felt.

What time blindness looks like day to day:

  • Sitting down for what feels like 10 minutes and coming up for air 50 minutes later
  • Saying "I will do this for a few minutes" and losing an entire morning
  • Feeling unable to begin something because the brain cannot locate "later" in any felt sense
  • Running chronically late despite genuine effort and real intelligence

Why Most Timers Do Not Fix Time Blindness

In our case, we try to focus on how to make tools and frameworks for people to better combat this issue. 

Phones: The worst. It's a vortex to distraction and will make you actually feel worse about your time. Been there. Done that. Over. I've actually contemplated deleting the alarm app on my phone. But that's for another day. 

Countdowns: Eh. These produce the wrong behavior, especially with kids or in the ADHD world. Countdowns usually produce anxiety and create the wrong pressure, sending people, again, in the opposite direction

Kitchen timers (like TimeTimer): Better, but not effective for tasks. We're programmed to understand what slivers of time look and feel like. It's why watches don't always need numbers on the dial. Setting a portion of time is okay, but still won't produce a better system. 

What a Visual Loop Does Differently for Time Blindness

A full visual loop gives the brain something it can actually use: a shape completing. And this is why we've created every inch of the Looptimer like we did.

Looptimer shows one full revolution for every duration you set. The light travels the entire perimeter of the device regardless of whether you set 5 minutes or 90. The brain does not see time running out. It sees a task taking shape.

Why this works for time blindness specifically:

  • Movement reads as sensory information. The brain registers the light moving without requiring active attention.

The Count-Up: What Happens When You Surface Late

Anyone with time blindness knows the disorientation of surfacing from deep work and having no idea how long they were gone.

The alarm sounded at some point. You missed it. Now you are trying to reconstruct whether it has been 8 minutes or 40.

Practical Ways to Use Looptimer for Time Blindness

Build a physical ritual around it. Set the timer before you begin anything. The act of setting it creates a physical moment that marks the beginning of a task window. Over time, reaching for the Looptimer becomes the signal to the brain: work begins now.

Use it for tasks under 10 minutes. Time blindness hits hardest on short tasks that feel inconsequential. A full 360-degree loop at 5 minutes makes a 5-minute task feel real, bounded, and complete.

Leave it visible but not central. Place it where you catch the glow without staring at it. The peripheral sensing is the point.

Check the count-up when you surface. Use the elapsed time as information. Build the habit of knowing where you actually landed versus where you planned to.

Try gradient mode. The light shifts from blue to red as time passes. The color change registers subconsciously, giving the brain a secondary visual signal without requiring active attention.

What to Look for in Any Visual Timer for Time Blindness

Whether you choose Looptimer or something else, these are the features that actually move the needle:

  • Visible movement, not just numbers. The brain needs a physical, moving signal, not digits to decode.
  • No ticking. Auditory load competes with the work.
  • Calm expiration. A jarring alarm creates a stress response at the moment you need a clean transition.
  • Count-up after expiration. The moment after the timer ends is where time blindness does its most damage. A timer that keeps going gives you a recovery path.
  • Single-purpose device. A phone timer means opening the phone. A dedicated physical device means the timer is the only thing it does.

Time blindness is a real neurological difference. The right timer does not cure it. It gives you an external anchor that does the tracking your brain cannot do alone.
